The aircraft shortage is no longer a temporary production setback. It is becoming a planning condition for air cargo through the end of the decade.

BOC Aviation chief executive Steven Townend recently described a structural shortage numbering in the thousands of aircraft, caused by years of delayed deliveries. According to SupplyChainBrain, the imbalance is likely to persist through 2030. That timeline matters to freight forwarders because passenger aircraft supply, dedicated freighter availability, maintenance schedules, and lease economics all feed into the capacity shippers can actually buy.

The practical lesson is simple: published fleet growth does not automatically become usable cargo space. Forwarders need to examine where new aircraft fly, what they can carry, and how reliably operators can keep them in service.

Why the shortage will take years to unwind

Airbus and Boeing sit at the center of a supply network involving engine makers, avionics suppliers, seat manufacturers, structures specialists, and thousands of smaller producers. A disruption at any critical supplier can delay a completed aircraft even when the final assembly line is ready.

The problem has persisted across multiple production cycles. Reuters reported in 2024 that IATA's director general said delivery delays from both major manufacturers were not improving. In 2025, Reuters reported that Airbus was warning some customers about delays reaching into 2027 and 2028. Airlines must therefore keep older aircraft operating longer, compete for scarce engines and spare parts, or lease replacement lift at higher cost.

Those responses create a second constraint: maintenance. Older fleets generally require more shop visits, while engine and component repair networks are managing their own backlogs. Capacity may exist on an airline's fleet list but disappear from a lane when an aircraft remains grounded longer than planned.

Belly capacity is not a global pool

Passenger aircraft carry a substantial share of international air cargo, especially on long-haul widebody routes. It is tempting to assume that rising passenger schedules solve the capacity problem. They do not solve it evenly.

Belly space follows travelers, not freight demand. A new passenger flight to a leisure destination may add little useful capacity for an industrial gateway hundreds of miles away. Narrowbody aircraft can also have limited cargo capability after passenger bags are loaded. FreightWaves has reported that less than 50% of available belly capacity worldwide is actually used for freight, reflecting mismatches between passenger networks and cargo demand.

That distinction makes lane-level analysis essential. A carrier can expand total seats while high-value production corridors remain tight. Transpacific electronics, pharmaceutical gateways, automotive clusters, and perishables markets each respond differently to passenger schedules, payload restrictions, and directional imbalances.

Forwarders should track capacity by origin-destination pair and aircraft type—not merely by airline or region. A weekly widebody frequency into a manufacturing hub can be more useful than several narrowbody services into a passenger-focused airport.

Dedicated freighters face a different equation

Freighters offer main-deck capacity, flexible schedules, and access to cargo hubs that passenger networks may not serve. Yet the dedicated fleet is also exposed to the aircraft shortage.

Operators deciding whether to replace older freighters must weigh expensive new-build aircraft, limited delivery slots, uncertain conversion timing, and higher maintenance spending. Passenger-to-freighter conversions can add supply, but conversion lines, feedstock aircraft, engines, and certification capacity are not unlimited. Strong demand for passenger aircraft can also keep suitable conversion candidates in passenger service longer.

The capacity outlook is therefore not a simple shortage-or-surplus story. FreightWaves cited a McKinsey forecast that cargo capacity could grow 4.5% annually over a decade, eventually moving the market back toward its historical balance between freighters and passenger belly space. Even if aggregate capacity grows at that rate, individual trade lanes can remain constrained when fleet deliveries, conversion schedules, or route economics do not align with demand.

Lease rates provide an early signal. When airlines extend existing leases or compete aggressively for aircraft, scarcity is being priced into future schedules. Those costs can flow into charter quotes, block-space agreements, peak surcharges, and the amount of capacity carriers are willing to commit to forwarders.

Build an airfreight capacity watchlist

A useful watchlist should translate aviation news into commercial decisions. Forwarders can begin with four categories:

  1. Delivery schedules: Monitor announced delivery targets, airline deferrals, and repeated changes to expected handover dates. Focus on carriers and aircraft types serving core cargo lanes.
  2. Fleet availability: Track maintenance extensions, engine groundings, retirements, lease renewals, and freighter conversion completions. Scheduled fleet size is less meaningful than serviceable fleet size.
  3. Lane deployment: Record widebody frequencies, seasonal passenger changes, payload limits, and alternate gateways. Separate headline capacity growth from space that can actually carry the required commodity.
  4. Commercial commitments: Watch allotment utilization, rejected bookings, charter pricing, spot-rate volatility, and how early carriers request peak-season forecasts.

These signals should sit beside shipment forecasts in the transportation management workflow. If a planned product launch depends on a constrained lane, teams can reserve allocations earlier, qualify a secondary gateway, or design an ocean-air alternative before spot pricing spikes.

Plan for volatility, not permanent scarcity

The aircraft supply crunch does not mean every market will be short of air cargo space until 2030. It means capacity will arrive unevenly, and disruptions will have less slack to absorb them. One lane may soften as passenger service expands while another tightens because of maintenance, geopolitical rerouting, or delayed freighter deployment.
